Perfect autumn walk at family-friendly nature reserve rich with wildlife

The days are getting shorter and the trees have turned gold and auburn, which can only mean one thing. Autumn is well and truly here. It is a great season to grab a hot drink, get your walking shoes on and explore the county’s countryside. Cambridgeshire is home to many great walks, but one charming Cambridgeshire village, Wicken, home to the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve, has another reason to celebrate the changing season and head out for a walk. The scenic autumn walk that ends at a cosy pub with an 'amazing' roast

Is there anything better than an autumnal walk that ends with a proper Sunday roast? Crisp leaves underfoot, surrounded by countryside, and the promise of a cosy pub at the end.

Here in Essex there's a great autumnal walk that ends right beside a country pub, The Hawk, situated in the antique village of Battlesbridge. The complete route is the 70-mile Saffron Trail that stretches all the way from Saffron Walden to Southend. However, section five of the route, referred to as “probably the most scenic of the seven”, according to Visit Essex, is an 11.5-mile walk that begins in Chelmer Village and ends in Battlesbridge.

My very literary holiday — with a ‘book club on tour’

A tranquil town with cobblestone streets and a majestic 11th-century castle, Launceston is the setting for the Second World War novel Mother’s Boy by Patrick Gale. The lead character, the real-life poet Charles Causley, spends his childhood here and shares his delight in Cornish sea-swimming for the first time (despite wearing the wrong trunks). Do the same at Widemouth Bay, where you can learn to surf on its slow-breaking waves — but don’t forget your wetsuit. Stay at the elegant Eagle House Hotel; the cooked breakfast is a winner and uses locally sourced ingredients.
